Bio--The
Terrace Bay native had an illustrious playing career, toiling 14 years in
the National Hockey League with the California Seals, Cleveland
Barons, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston
Bruins.
Prior to joining the NHL Simmer tallied 99 points in 70 games for the Sault
Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the then Ontario Hockey Association.
His offensive production caused Simmer to be drafted by two leagues. He was
the Seals third round pick, 39th overall, in the 1974 NHL amateur draft. The
same year he was also selected by the Cleveland Crusaders in the second
round, 26th overall, in the World Hockey Association draft.
Among
Simmer's accomplishments were a pair of 56-goal seasons and registered 711
points during his 712-game NHL career including 342 goals and 369 points.
Much of Simmer's on-ice success came during his days in L.A. where he teamed
up with Marcel Dionne
and Dave Taylor on the Kings famed "Triple Crown Line."
He also participated in three NHL All-Star Games and the left winger still
ranks eighth on the Kings’ all-time leading scorers list with 222 goals, 244
assists & 466 totals in 384 games.
It was also with the Kings that Simmer was twice named a NHL First Team All-Star.

Moving
on to the Boston Bruins Simmer racked up another 192 points. In 1986, Simmer
won the prestigious Bill
Masterton Trophy, given to the NHL player who best exemplifies the
qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
He
played one season in Europe before retiring in 1989.
Simmer is still heavily involved in the game serving for over 10 years as
a radio-television colour commentator and analyst with the Phoenix Coyotes
and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim prior to that.
Simmer’s
commitment to the community is also evident throughout his career having been
involved
with many charities.
They include the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Special Olympics,
March of Dimes, Genesis Fund for Children and American Cancer Society. He
also participates as well by playing in numerous celebrity charity games.
