Back in 1925 the Port Arthur Seniors hockey club became the first club from the Lakehead to capture the Allan Cup, emblematic of senior hockey supremacy in Canada.
The Seniors featured the likes of Lorne Chabot in goal who would go on to star with the New York Rangers.
Another one of the star players on the team was Gordon "Phat" Wilson who is a honoured member of both the Hockey Hall of Fame as well as the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.
A year later the Seniors would repeat as champs. In fact only six teams in the history of the Allan Cup have gone on to repeat as champions. Along with Port Arthur, the Thunder Bay Twins did it twice in the 1980's joining the Winnipeg Victorias, Toronto Granites, Moncton Hawks and Warroad Lakers as repeat titleists.
The Allan Cup has been contested ever year since the 1907-08 season when the Ottawa Cliffsides captured the inaugural Allan Cup crown.
The 1924-25 Port Arthur Seniors was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.
