Back in 1922 The Fort William Great War Veterans hockey club travelled to Winnipeg, Man., to play in the first Memorial Cup championship final to be played outside of Toronto against the Regina Pats.

The two-game, totel-goal series was contested at Shea's Amphitheater in Winnipeg, which was the only artificial ice surface between Toronto and Vancouver.

Game one of the series between Fort William and Regina was played on March 20, 1922 and the War Vets trailed 4-3 going into the third period but rallied back scoring two unanswered goals en route to a 5-4 win.

Two days later in game two the War Vets and Pats battled to a 3-3 tie giving Fort William the title and the honour of being Memorial Cup champions.

For the Fort William War Vets this was their first and only appearance in a Memorial Cup final. They also became one of two teams from Port Arthur/Fort William who went on earn this prestigious trophy. The other being the 1947-48 Port Arthur West End Bruins.

The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919, in remembrance of the many young men and women who paid the supreme sacrifice for Canada in the First World War. The Cup has been awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada since that time.

The 1992 Memorial Cup champion Fort William Great War Veterans was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.
